Effects were observed in the early 18th century among Italian copper workers and later towards the end of the 19th century. A Glasgow doctor coined the term Boilermaker’s ear. Thomas Barr observed symptoms of hearing impairment amongst shipbuilders on the River Clyde and it’s easy to imagine the din.
